Life Car by Morgan

The "Life Car" is a concept car by the British hand built luxury custom car manufacturer Morgan. Morgan has been in its family business for one hundred years making a very interesting automobile indeed. Its invisible "insides" are wood, the smooth interior is a sheath of leather. Its luminous exterior metal shell is attached to its lightweight wood chassis perhaps by automotive magic.

As my husband hand builds his own 'custom seven second Whipple super charged drag race cars' from the ground up for fun, we are definitive car people and I found the scrumptious two tone charcoal gray Morgan which I saw today to be most interesting. Its owner accorded me a treat: I even felt its wood.

A great lover of fine architecture, I found the Morgan's custom built garage designed to look like an antique gate keeper's cottage to be as wonderful as the beautiful car it was constructed to house. The large, stately ivy enshrouded brick structure contained floor to ceiling windows, custom spot lights on dimmers, as well as classical music designed to enhance, and perchance, entertain the car.

Caesar

When it came time for the nostalgic super charged race car to be painted, I had one word: Ceasar. "Get Ceasar to do it," I said.

Ceasar is my favorite air brush artist. I fell in love the instant I saw an image which too strongly resembled Orchid on the mammoth hood of a tractor trailer. "Who did that?" I wailed in awe. "Who around here can fucking paint like that?"

"Ceasar." My husband told me. "Only Ceasar."

The funniest story that I have with this car is: myHusband and I go to Dunkin' Donuts for coffee. Next to us, a car pulls up, and the driver jumps out. He begins jumping up and down, holding his crotch, and saying, "Wow. Wow. WOW."

I look into my arms, and they're empty. Now I panic. I think, "WHERE is ORCHID? WHERE IS SHE??" And I look at the guy. And he's still jumping. And I think, "Wow. He can see Orchid in the CAR?" And then I realize, Orchid isn't in the car. She's not in my arms, she's home. And FINALLY it dawns on me. This guy wasn't jumping around for Orchid, he was jumping around for the CAR I'd gotten out of.

Who knew? In my world, guys only jump and hold their crotch for Orchid.

Cradle of Aviation Car Show

If you're on the island for the weekend of August 23rd, 24th, and 25th you might want to pass by the Nassau County's Cradle of Aviation at old Mitchell Field.

Yes, the planes will be there. But that's not the point. This is all about cars. The museum is hosting what is supposedly the largest car show ever on the island. However, it seems to be woefully unpublicized, so we will see.
.
In addition to some of Hollywood's most famous automobiles including the Batmobile, the brothers' car, Undercover Hemi, running in support of the Wounded Warrior Project and NETO will be on hand for the entire weekend. I'm considering attending with both Orchid and Alabaster; ask for them at the Wounded Warriors' tent.

Wounded Warrior Project

The brothers who run this car are lucky Americans. Lucky in every sense of the word. All three are Vietnam veterans. Two entered the Army, one entered the Navy. None of them ever saw Vietnam.

To tie their own proverbial 'yellow ribbon', the brothers have donated the doors on their race car this season to the Wounded Warrior Project, hoping to increase the public's awareness of the organization.

Race Car

The three brothers who built and run this car have been around a long time. They are the second generation of an automotive enthusiast family.

Their parents produced an award winning show car and must have put motor oil in their children's milk. What else could explain this?

A seven second blown alcohol super charged hemi Monza. They built it. From scratch. In multiple incarnations. Race cars get bashed up. On a good day, they come back again and again. Originally, from my old car which was a 1975 Monza town coupe. My car from college. The baby brother threatened me with death if the car got sold to anyone else. "We are making a race car from that."

My wedding ring is literally a beautiful smooth titanium circlette which my husband machined on his lathe from a bent race car valve from this car. He has also machined nifty metal goblets for the dolls and the elves, but he'll never admit to those.

NorthEast Timing Organization

NETO is a chartered 501C3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of nostalgic drag racing motor sports. For track meets, the group is currently divided into two classes of race cars and one group of motor bikes. The club is open to anyone possessing an interest in drag racing and who would like to attend any or none of the meets, go to the three annual parties, hang out and have an extremely good time. Owning a qualified car or a vintage bike, is nice, but it is not required for membership.

NETO's three annual parties are called "Marcus Dairy", "The Picnic", and "The Banquet". Marcus Dairy is the club's annual membership drive, the picnic is late summer, and the the banquet is the awards dinner at Christmas time. While no one in the club is ever unsocial, at the track they are typically all business and machinery orientated; they go to the track to race. At at the parties, the machines are thankfully quiet and the time is devoted to happily networking and completely enjoying friends and family.

Many of us have been discussing how to link the artist and racing communities further. Some of us, the extremely rare few, truly belong to both worlds. Cars and bikes have always sported fine paint jobs and glorious airbrush work; almost all of the time this work is performed by specialized artists or professional paint shops. In addition, a number of us currently do 'car jewelry' and use old car parts in sculpture. To further the discussion of how artists can participate in the racing community, as well as the flip side of how can the racing community help promote art, Orchid attended this year's NETO Picnic.

This year's picnic was again held at the Drewhurst Ranch. Known as tommyanderinsplace, the Drewhurst Ranch is a twenty acre estate nestled in the rolling hills of lower New York State. With many people gladly travelling several hours to attend, the members and their families party from early afternoon until the stars twinkle late evening; some people leave the next day. Anyone who did not attend the picnic this year missed an incredibly good time, lots of delicious homemade treats, and rudely interrupted fireworks.

Down the heavily wooded country lane from the Drewhurst Ranch past the meadow with the beekeeping boxes, there were three beautiful horses and one adorable striped donkey. The donkey's name is "George W."
.
A number of folks opted opted to motor to the picnic in their vintage mobiles, thereby creating instant entertainment with a "Mini Car Show" . As we wandered through it with Orchid, on our way back from feeding and petting the horses, we were particularly taken with the blackandwhite vintage station wagon in the photos. We deemed it 'Best in Show' and simply loved the littlebluewords sign on the back of it. We were very careful that not one of Orchid's long hairs should so much as graze the vehicle while taking the photographs. Two male club members insisted that the best part of the car was not the littlebluewords sign, nor was it the fact that the car was a rare two door something, they told us that the engine was the best part. "That car has a twentythousanddollar motor!!" We gave each other the "I wouldn't pay tencentsatagaragesale for that" look and then said, "Ok! Then let's take a picture of that ENGINE!!"
