Izzy is Pink

Izzy is pink. Izzy is wonderful. Izzy is an outstanding example of fine doll art. We had been talking about 'interesting dolls' and I realized that I needed to show you Izzy.
.
One buys a 'Soom kit' wishing that an 'Izzy' would jump out. However, that is not how it happens. Dolls such as Izzy might start with a 'kit', but it is only after long hours of hard work, much thought, and often a great deal of money that maybe, perhaps, an Izzy will emerge. Each resin kit doll has the 'potential of an Izzy'; few dolls ever reach that lofty goal.
.
Izzy has all of her 'original' Soom Beryl factory kit pieces. Izzy was created by theFontBandit and loving painted by theFontBandit to 'be herself'. Izzy's petulant spoiled pink princessness comes through in every photograph of her.
.
You can find theFontBandit here: http://saynotoinertia.livejournal.com .

Edgar in Slantways

.
Once upon a time, in lands which were far away and so very close, there lived two Queens. Their hearts were close though their lands were far, so often they would stay in touch through their magic mirrors.
.
They spoke of feathers and fabrics, walls and walkways, raspberries, jerboas and jelly. They laughed and laughed, for who had as much fun as they?
.
One day, the shorter of the Queens said with a smile, "I am getting a dog."
.
"So, I heard" replied her friend. "I suppose you could not resist."
.
"No, I could not resist. How could I resist the hooves? Darling little hooves."
The Queen of Little Cow Harbor continued, "There is just one problem. Poodles need to be pink." .
.
The Queen of Slantways chuckled. "That is not a problem at all. Just use magic."
.
"Magic?" The Queen of Little Cow Harbor queried. "What sort of magic?"
.
"Why you dye his fur of course !" the Queen of Slantways replied.
.
The Queen of Little Cow Harbor considered this carefully. Then she said to her friend, "No. That simply will not do. Of course, it will do. But it will not do, as I cannot do it. I can do all sorts of magic. Magic is not a problem. But dye is wet. I do no wet magic at all."
.
"I do it everyday ! It is great fun !" exclaimed the Queen of Slantways.
.
"No." said the Queen of Little Cow Harbor "Unless there is simply no other way, I will not use wet magic. I have seen 'The Wizard of Oz' too many times. I will stick to fabric and gemstones and beads. Fine golden threads. Exotic miniature feathers. Wet magic is for others. Oh, dear. How shall my poodle ever get to be pink? It is simply the most terrible predicament. He needs to be exactly precisely, perfectly exactly, the most exactly precisely perfect shade of pink."
She sighed. "You know that color" said the Queen of Little Cow Harbor .
.
"I do indeed" smiled the Queen of Slantways "Pink is my color."
Ever able to divine the mood of the Queens, the magic mirror shimmered and shivered in its anticipation.
"Send him to me ! " exclaimed the Queen of Slantways "I will turn him pink !"
.
That is how I came to send my poodle across the borders of our fairylands with the instructions to my friend, who is both fellow Queen and groomer: Do not send him back to me unless he can dance for his treats. Do not send him back to me if he is not comfortable in twilight; it is almost always twilight here. Do not send him back to me unless he is precisely perfectly pink.

As the clock struck midnight last evening, the Queen of Slantways appeared in my magic mirror. "It is done !" she proclaimed. I said, "He is very beautiful. However, he is so beautiful, I am seeing no overt marks of beauty. Are his beauty marks hidden?"
.
My friend chuckled. "Your birthday approaches. Before another fortnight passes, your poodle shall be home to celebrate. You shall see his shimmering violet toes and his beauty marks will be apparent."
.
Ooooooooohhhhhhhh ! I cannot wait.
.
You can reach the Queen of Slantways here: http://www.candygears.com/ . See more of the poodle and join us as we chat about him here: http://catcara.livejournal.com/ .

Orchid's Wedding Date

The long awaited date has been set ! Mark your colorful calendars for the first elegant event of 2010.
.
Orchid will marry Doug on Sunday, January 24th, 2010 at Patchoque Manor here on the island. The town of Patchoque is located in Suffolk County on Long Island in New York.
.
Yes, we are talking a dolls' wedding. No, I do not expect them to stand up and take their vows. If they simply stand up for the day, I will be more than pleased. Orchid is a UFDC Doll Fanciers' Triple Award winner. As such, she is accorded priviledges no other doll would dream. This year, the club will host her initial wedding celebration. It is my hope that Orchid and Doug will move on to a full blown party later in the year.
.
You are all invited for January. An admission fee of five dollars or so goes to benefit the generous non-profit UFDC Doll Fanciers chapter hosting the day long show. More information on the UFDC and its many incarnations can be found here: http://www.ufdc.org/ .
.
Music for Orchid, Doug, and their wedding can be found here: http://catcara.livejournal.com/ Tag: music.
.
The date of Orchid's bridal shower has yet to be determined. We are hoping to do it this summer. Remember, you can always join the 'journal' and plan along with us.

Masquerade !

Often, I am asked, "What's next? What are you working on? Will you tell?" Hmmmm, the answer is: Lots of fun things. After the exhibition ends in September, Orchid will spend her time getting ready for her wedding which is in January 2010. Orchid's wedding, which you can most certainly attend if you are out this way, will be the next event at Patchogue Manor at the UFDC Doll Fanciers' Show http://www.ufdg.org .

Orchid's wedding will kick off a year of Masquerade hoopla, keeping me busy with Venetian Carnival masks, silken ball gowns, vintage embroidered jackets, Swarovski jewelled tiaras and yes, horse races. The 'horses' will be attending the balls and we will have a ball figuring out who the most handsome horse in the mini-herd is.

Keep your eyes out for "The Last Unicorn" as he emerges, late to the party from out of the rose garden, to see if we have a winner. Listen to us laugh and join in here: http://catcara.livejournal.com .

Where You Can See THE DOLLS

My September 2009 exhibit is on right now for the entire month of September. Any time the library is open during this month, you can see "The Dolls" here: http://www.nassaulibrary.org/plainv/ .
.
The Plainview-Old Bethpage Library is high pedestrian traffic, plentiful parking, easy no-nonsense access, and is a facility with a large art exhibition hall. It is located on Old Country Road just east of Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway on Long Island in Nassau County.
.
Part of the fun, so I am told, is "guessing" which of 'us' did what. Some artists' work are living and is readily identifiable, others have been lost to history but are no less important. Telling you quickly what you do not want to miss: Sally Shore made the miniature beaded lavender ribbon boa which, of course, Orchid is wearing as Sally made it just for her. Myrtle painted Chloe's stunning face. Miss Ally's book is indeed available for purchase directly from her. Baby Dead Ornie who Orchid is doing something with, is by Deb Kirkpatrick. Doug is a Dollmore Evgenia Hanoel LE 10 with Dollmore Studio paint. The crystal kisses were hand blown and one of them is signed. A tiny Elfdoll Seedling sleeps peacefully in the birdsnest.
.
It took me over five and a half hours to install. Many of the pieces are available for purchase directly from the corresponding artists. For example: Sally Shore makes 'people-sized' ribbon boas; you can indeed dress like Orchid. Well, almost.
.
Please stop by; do enjoy the show. It is the last time Orchid will be seen by the public before she marries Doug in January.

September Exhibit

The upcoming September 2009 exhibit of my work will be Oriental in theme. The 'theme' was entirely up to me and, as with every previous exhibit, most of what you will see has never been seen before. The converse is also true: if you miss the exhibit, well, you will not get to see this one repeated.

The window to the fairyland that is Little Cow Harbor, opens briefly for one month. When it closes, that view is gone forever. To me this makes perfect sense; the dolls will have moved on with their lives.

To get you in the mood, I have selected this:

The exhibit will be held at Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library. They have a very beautiful space dedicated to fine art in their foyer.

Azul Book

Azul is one of my original one-of-a-kind hand sculpted ball joined dolls. By their very nature, one-of-a-kind dolls are rare. Difficult and time consuming to create, Azul was a labor of love. She is apparently Oriental in persuasion, very distinctive with her long peacock blue hair, and is approximately two feet tall. Deemed to be the very essence of a modern high fashion model, Azul was the focus of her own interactive photographic installation by Richard Gardner.

Ball jointed doll aficionado and Washington D.C. fine arts photographer Miss Ally has just completed a book on Azul. This is actually her 'second' book on Azul. The first book was actually deemed so valuable by rare book dealers, that no more were printed. Thus, ensuring the value of the few original copies. Consequently, this is the first time, you can add 'one of my dolls' or 'one of our books' to your collection. The book is available for on-line purchase here: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/805045 "Click the pages" to peruse and buy this tiny gem of a publication.

Fireball XL5

I grew up loving this. I spent countless hours scrutinizing every aspect of it. I went on to become a fan of "Lost in Space" and, in far later years for work related reasons, "Star Trek". Perhaps, "Fireball XL5" is the reason why i make "the dolls". Certainly there must be some reason, as I did not 'play' with dolls as a child; I only made the figures. Although, I did always think when I watched these episodes of delightful puppetry, "The best part is being able to see the strings."

Life Car by Morgan

The "Life Car" is a concept car by the British hand built luxury custom car manufacturer Morgan. Morgan has been in its family business for one hundred years making a very interesting automobile indeed. Its invisible "insides" are wood, the smooth interior is a sheath of leather. Its luminous exterior metal shell is attached to its lightweight wood chassis perhaps by automotive magic.
.
As my husband hand builds his own 'custom seven second Whipple super charged drag race cars' from the ground up for fun, we are definitive car people and I found the scrumptious two tone charcoal gray Morgan which I saw today to be most interesting. Its owner accorded me a treat: I even felt its wood.
.
A great lover of fine architecture, I found the Morgan's custom built garage designed to look like an antique gate keeper's cottage to be as wonderful as the beautiful car it was constructed to house. The large, stately ivy enshrouded brick structure contained floor to ceiling windows, custom spot lights on dimmers, as well as classical music designed to enhance, and perchance, entertain the car.
.

GoGaDoll 2009 Wedding Ceremony

As you know, Orchid gets married at a UFDC show this January 2010. In answer to the many queries of, "Will a minister preside?" The answer is, "No." She will be married in public, where you can indeed see her on her wedding day, but there will be no throwing of bouquets and no wedding hoopla. Knowing that we would like to do a catered party at a hall on the water later in the year, people ask, "Will there be a minister then?" The answer is still, "No."

Often I wondered, where do people get the idea that a minister should preside at a doll's wedding? In my mind for a doll show, surely chocolate kisses are enough. At a lavishly catered affair, wouldn't people be interested in socializing, dancing, and music? However, yes, dolls would be invited; it's a doll's wedding.

The Golden Gate Doll Association put on "Weddings San Francisco Style" this past weekend. For those of you who will someday attend Orchid's wedding to Doug here on the east coast, take notes on how different the affected affairs will be.

Lindsay Kemp

It is a good thing that for everyone who complains, there are ten people who cheer me on. I received this video in response to my "Velvet Goldmine" complaint. It comes from Britain with the explanation, "The nightmarish green thing is based on Lindsay Kemp who taught David Bowie how to move on stage."
.
This is not for anyone who does not appreciate Cirque du Soliel, ballet, or performance art. That being said, you may decide whether or not to chance viewing it. I must also warn you that opera just might be being played in the background.

Orchid's Wedding

In our dreams, this is the party that we plan:

Velvet Goldmine

Yes, this is what Edgar, the pink poodle, will be like:

He is due to arrive perhaps any day now. From here his head will travel to the west coast to the Queen of Slantways for poodelicious grooming.

Footnote: June 1st, 2009 . I have just received a complaint about this entry. 'We' like this movie. Therefore, I have refused to 'remove' the entry from the blog. However, I did capitulate by saying I would post a WARNING. I was told that the warning should read, "Warning: animated equal opportunity violent sex" and that the music on the video should be Tina Turner singing "What's love got to do with it?" As you can see, I keep my promises. Whether you view the video or not, is up to you.
.
I also need to tell you, as it was extremely clear to me but apparently not so apparent to fans, the poodle is not "the green thing" in the video. He is the guy in the shiny tail coat. Personally, I didn't even notice "the green thing". I was lost in thoughts of my future pet pink poodle who is on his way from Korea.

Kyo Otake

Yes, this is a doll. We're not going to argue whether or not it has a soul. It is quite evident that it does.
.
It is one of the life size works of Japanese ball jointed doll artist Kyo Otake. The dolls are stone clay over a carved Styrofoam armature.
.

Lilu

'We' did not sculpt this. I know that that will be the first question asked, so I need that clear right up front. This is a 'Soom Sard', a resin casting. However, he is one which has been elevated through the skill of his mama to a level of 'fine art'.
.
Lilu is literally one of the most well known Sooms in the world. Dollie aficionados call him by name. Many can even tell you he was born mute and what he likes for dinner. For those who think that 'kit dolls' can never reach the rarefied realm of fine art, we point to pieces such as Lilu and say, "Think again."

Poodle Boy

For those of you who have been following along on the interactive LiveJournal, it will not come as surprising new news that I am building a pink poodle dandy for my amusement.
.
The quick sketch here was done by "Kasamudhari777" who is a Canadian fine artist. Expect me to tell you more about Kasa's work in the future.
.
The "parts" for the poodle should arrive from Asia by the end of this month. His groomer, the Queen of Slantways, told me that his luscious pink poodle fur has not yet arrived from Korea. Since I have no desire to have a bald naked poodle around the house, I am content to wait.
.
Visit the LiveJournal at http://catcara.livejournal.com , follow the 'Tags' on the left for 'Edgar, Heliot, and Soom' to try to make heads and poodle tails of what we are up to.

Good friends, good cheer, great art.
.
Perhaps you would like to join us on the afternoon of Sunday, May 3rd, 2009, to celebrate the Guild's fiftieth anniversary.
.
Because of insurance considerations, I declined participation in the gallery show. The dolls will not be there, but a great deal of equally enticing fine art will be.

I will consider bringing Orchid to the afternoon reception with me, but I cannot guarantee that she will be there.

Please enjoy the show and help us celebrate the beginning of the next fifty years of creating fine art on the island.

The Frog and the Fairy

Quickly drawn as an impromptu present by the generous Queen of Slantways as a delightful gift to the now smiling Queen of Little Cow Harbor, is the delicate watercolor portrait sketch of the two figures we are currently working on.
.
Bridging a continent to unite queendoms and fairylands is not easy. For all of the similarities there are as many differences between our lands; as Queens, we find we do not spell 'fairy' the same way. Whether the creature we are working on is a 'swamp fairy' or a 'marsh faery' there is no doubt she will be unique and amazing when we are done. She most certainly will always be a denizen of Slantways, a credit to that generous Queen.
.
This is your first look at our ultra-handsome enchanted Laurant Remy and his darling poisonous bride to be. To hear their songs visit: htttp://catcara.livejournal.com Tag: music

Innocence

"A fine spring day, a carriage sprints between this world and the next." - Batou

"Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence", an animated film exploring the virtual reality which is more real than one thinks. The dolls depicted are based on the work of Hans Bellmer.
.
The lives our dolls actually lead, evidenced and captured on photographs, and the philosophical implications of their lives has always interested me.
.
No one would attempt to pigeon hole Orchid as a mere 'object of art'. Her luxurious life continues as she readies for her wedding to Doug in January 2010.

La Famiglia

Conveniently located off the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway in Nassau County on the Island, La Famiglia specializes in utterly delicious Italian delicacies, served in utterly huge quantities, at an utterly fair price.
.
My husband and I feasted upon enormous seafood stuffed portobello mushrooms, zuppa di mussels in a garlic red sauce, and outrageously tender ultra-fresh calamari in a hot sauce.
.
Upon discovering that I have a debilitating weakness for tangy key lime pie, the owner treated us to dessert on the house with our coffee and cappuchino. Hands down, it was the best key lime pie I have ever had outside of my beloved Conch Republic.

Available for parties, and certainly on my list of 'Maybe we'll go HERE!' for Orchid's shower, find this wonderful restaurant here: http://www.lafamiglia-ny.com/west.html There is also an 'eastern location' in Smithtown.

If you drive a race car and you win, you will like this. If you drive a race car and you lose, you will like this. If you drive a race car, and you have a sense of humor, this is for you. UFDC Doll Fanciers' 2009 Show Pictures
